Nelson Mandela – A Tribute
How can there be anything else to talk about today? Yesterday we lost one of the greatest men to have ever lived, up there with Ghandi and Mother Theresa. When I heard last night it was one of those life defining moments we all have where you’re suddenly hit with the realisation that an era has ended but also aware that the legacy will live on. Nelson Mandela’s love, compassion and incredible wisdom will live forever and continue to teach generations to come that forgiveness and respect should live hand in hand.
The power of never, ever giving up
May he live on through his tireless work
The above quote summarises his life’s work. He took on the seemingly impossible task of ending Apartheid and spent 27 years in prison for his efforts refusing release repeatedly as the condition always imposed upon him was to give up on his dream. It was non-negotiable for him to let his people down and give up the fight.
Years later he actually did achieve the impossible and became the first black president of South Africa, a country where only a few short years earlier black people had been regarded as the lowest of the low. In 1990 he was in prison and no black person was allowed to vote, only four years later he was elected as president.
Nothing is impossible. We can change the world, we can make it a better place, we can put an end to starvation and tyranny….it’s all possible if we only dream big enough and never, ever give up.
If we learn nothing else from Nelson Mandel’s life let it be that one human being can make all the difference in the world and change the lives of millions because they have a dream and they are prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve their dream. Let us learn from him and others like him and take up the baton from where he left off and continue his fight for understanding, freedom and equality.
