The ‘Keeping fit’ conundrum….

Check it out!  I’m back on the fitness trail at last!  Having tried all kinds of stuff over the last year with varying degrees of success I’m now back in the gym and loving it!

I’ve done the 30 day Abs challenge, the 30 day Little Black Dress Challenge, I’ve sat on my exercise bike and I’ve bounced along to fitness videos but none of them ‘floated my boat’, I’m a lifelong ‘gym bunny’!

I’m going back to this!!!

I love going to the gym.  As I leave the house to get into the car to go I dread it, as I’m driving there It’s with a distinct lack of enthusiasm, but the second I walk through the door I’m inspired!  Give me a room full of equipment and I’m like the proverbial mosquito in a nudist camp, I’m totally spoilt for choice and want to do everything at once.

By the time I’ve worked up a good sweat on the cardio machines I’m chafing at the bit to get to the weights.  And I don’t mean the pussy machines, I’m on about free weights!  I can never get the same burn with a machine that I can get from chucking around some dumbbells.

I love the functional stuff as well, give me a Bosu, some bands, a few kettle bells and medicine balls and I’m away.  I have a permanent, soppy grin on my face the whole way through.  Show me the boxing gloves and I might go into a swoon, especially if I have a sparring partner.

Now then, I’m totally aware that many of you are scratching your heads in dismay.  How can anyone actually, genuinely enjoy going to the gym?  I can’t answer that.  Maybe it’s because I’m competitive and I love watching my fitness level improve as I compete with myself to better the last workout?  Maybe it’s just the whole atmosphere?  I have absolutely no idea but I’ve been a member of some gym or other for as long as I can remember and have always loved the workouts I’ve done.

Keeping fit is important to me, it always has been.  I’ve always been very active and challenged my body, when I was young I was good at sport and really enjoyed it for the most part.  There’s also a history of arthritis in my family and have therefore been only too well aware of how important it is to maintain my fitness and bone strength.

So why have I gained one and half stone in the last 2 years?  It’s been a combination really. Something rocked my world just under 2 years ago and threw me totally off balance, my gym visits became less frequent.  Due to same occurrence I had to cancel my gym membership because I simply couldn’t afford it anymore, then I broke a bone in my foot and was on crutches for weeks on end as it couldn’t heal as I wasn’t able to rest it, on went a stone!  Add to all of that the fact that my life has become a lot more sedentary over the last couple of years as I’ve turned my attention to writing and it all adds up.  I’ve taken to doing 20 ‘Star Jumps’ every 20 minutes as I’m working, anyone watching would think I was stark staring bonkers!

But, enough is enough and seeing myself on This Morning was the final straw!  18 months ago I was a size 8, very fit, incredibly toned and looking pretty good.  Now I just feel fat and flabby!  Not that the way I look is the thing that bothers me the most…no…’s the way I feel and the subsequent lack of energy.  It has to change and now it will.  I’m on it!

And what about all of you for whom the very word ‘gym’ is a total anathema?  Well, keeping fit doesn’t have to involve the gym, there are so many other things we can do to keep active and that’s really what it’s all about.  The key is to find whatever it is that you enjoy doing, be it walking, cycling or team sports, we all have something that we can enjoy in order to keep fit.

And even the most unfit can do it, start slowly and build up, your body will thank you for it and so will all of your family and friends.  I’m only 3 days into my new campaign and I already feel more energised and happier knowing I’m doing something about it.

Please make a start, I don’t care how old you are, how unfit you are, how overweight you are… can do it!  And remember the old saying….STARTED IS HALF FINISHED!

I wish you all the best with your new regime, do keep me posted about what you’re doing and how it’s going?  I’ve even created a Facebook page to help you….Join me at ‘Let’s get fit!’  I’d love to know what you’re doing……
